This is a favorite Santa musical toy that my kids always loved. I have been wanting to paint it for a long time and finally decided today was the day. It is a beautiful sunny day with wonderful light  coming into my studio. This one came together quickly and was great fun to paint.

Studio Day

September Morning, BHI, 11 x 14 oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

I spent the day painting in my studio on a rare pre-holiday, uninterrupted day.
This is one of two paintings I worked on today and neither of them is completely finished.
The lighthouse on Bald Head Island is a commission and just needs a little more work. I painted this scene a couple of months ago in a 5 x 7 format. This larger one was even more fun.

I took a workshop this past week-end in Cary at Waverly Artists Group and had a wonderful time painting and getting to know some wonderful artists from around the state. Our instructor was Maggie Siner who presented us with challenging painting exercises. Maggie is an excellent teacher and a fantastic artist.

The sun just came out after a couple of days of rain so I am heading out for a walk.

Traditional Bloom

Amaryllis , 6 x 6 " oil on panel,©2013, Fay Terry

$75. free shipping

This is my favorite Christmas flower and I always have several blooming in December in pots.
They get pretty tall and sometimes start falling over and have to be tied up. This one is very velvety and beautiful and we are enjoying it.
I have some paper-whites blooming right now too, but they have a very strong and unpleasant scent. These are the first ones I have had that don't smell really good, they must be a different variety than what I've had in the past. Does anyone know the name of a good paper-white narcissus bulb to plant that smells sweet?

Strawberry Lime

 Outnumbered, 6 x 6 " oil on panel
$75. and free shipping

I always make the same fruit smoothie for breakfast so I decided to try a new combination and made strawberry lime which went well with the warm temperatures we are having. I didn't even need a jacket when I went out earlier today.
I have been painting every day but  not finding time to post. I hope you enjoy these bright colors which inspired me on a warm but very gray day.

Lively Lovelies

Floral Convergence, 16 X 20, ©2013, Fay Terry

I have been working on some commissions for Christmas gifts and having so much fun doing it.
If you would like to have me do a special painting for a gift, please let me know soon. I can accept just a few more commissions.

I am so grateful to all of you who have been keeping in touch and sending me comments, buying my work, both online and in galleries, and making me absolutely certain that there is a great deal of magic in ART! I have met so many wonderful people this year  that I might not have gotten to know except through painting.

Thanks, Ya'll! You keep me excited about creating art.

Four Legged Friend

Chic Poodle, 5 x 7" oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

This girl loves dressing up, she knows when she looks stylish. I let her wear one of my favorite scarves for just a few minutes. She loves the tiny sparkles in the yarn, just like I do.
Camden is nine years old and one of the joys of my life, I think she can almost read my mind. She is named after two of my favorite places- Camden, near where she was born in South Carolina, and Camden, Maine. She loves to run, especially on the beach.

Remembering Beach Days

Big Hat, Little Girl, 6 x 6 " oil on panel © 2013, Fay Terry

This is one of my favorites and it was recently sold by Sunset River Gallery, which sells quite a few of my beach paintings. The seashore is a wonderful place to play. I still love to play in the sand and water, build castles, and "dig a hole to China".
I was at the beach on Saturday and it was seventy five degrees and gorgeous. We even got to eat at our favorite waterside restaurant, which will be closing for the winter soon.
Hold on to those great summer memories to tide you over til it comes again!

Love Roses

Say It With Flowers, 16 x 20" oil on canvas, © Fay Terry, 2013

available

This painting is one of several larger ones I have been working on and I am pleased with the way it turned out. My husband gave me these roses on my birthday and I began the painting right away because I love painting roses before they open up. It's a good thing I took a photo as well because they changed so much each day and now their look is totally different.
The Han vase, patterned after Han dynasty examples and glazed in Chinese blue, was made by my friend Ben Owen III, from Seagrove, North Carolina.

This will be going to a gallery soon, so contact me if you are interested.

Granny Smith Apples

Sing, Piebird, Sing, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100.

Someone wants an apple pie, just when I am trying to avoid doing any baking. I have so many paintings I am planning to do and I really want to spend all my time in the studio, not in the kitchen.

I am working on some commissions for Christmas gifts and will be accepting a few more up until the end of November. Please let me know if you have something in mind.

Did you notice the date today, 11-12-13?

Sunlit apple

Not Enough Apples, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100. free shipping

It would be nice to make an apple crisp for a cool night like this but, as you can see...
We have been eating a lot of apples and other fruit so it's time to restock.

Have a happy week-end!

Coffee Time

Coffee Time, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100. free shipping

I just love painting stripes and this little yellow pitcher is a favorite prop for paintings.
My afternoon coffee time is becoming a necessity now that it's getting dark earlier, and I'm waking up an hour earlier than usual.  I seem to get sleepy about three thirty and need a little caffeine.

Different Day

Two Camellias, 5 x 7 " oil on linen panel,©2013, Fay Terry

$100. free shipping

This was an early morning painting because I knew I would be out most of the day. I even cut these Camellias last night so I wouldn't have to go out in the morning to get them.
It has been a gorgeous day, with temperatures in the high seventies and my friend and I had lunch together and shopped, then had afternoon coffee. What a fun day it has been and tonight my husband is taking me to dinner. I will get back in my routine tomorrow but it's been nice to play for an entire day.

Thanks for looking at my art!

Cheerful Morning

Cheerful Morning, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100. and free shipping worldwide

This is one of the prettiest apples I have seen lately even though it is not my favorite variety.
Honeycrisp are the ones I like to eat, but they are not very bright in color.
Granny Smith apples are my favorite for cooking and I am thinking about making an apple cake that was featured last month in "Our State" magazine. This will necessitate yet another trip to the grocery store, but will probably be worth it. I also like to paint these nicely shaped green apples that the recipe calls for.
If you are local and interested in this painting, let me know and I will deliver it to you.

Vitamin C On Demand

Sunny Day Orange, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100, free shipping

This yellow bowl is another beautiful piece of pottery from Franklin Square Gallery in Southport. I highly recommend this co-op gallery as an excellent place to purchase gifts of locally made pottery and paintings, including some of my own.

I have been eating an orange every day and I love them as an afternoon snack before I start cooking dinner.  I'd rather eat my Vitamin C than drink it, and oranges have lots, but there are seven foods that have more. Papayas, red bell peppers, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, kiwis, and strawberries all beat the citrus fruits. Kale has the most, with a whopping one hundred sixty-one milligrams. I love all these foods so no more vitamin C supplements for me.

State Fair Chicken

Tilly, 5 x 7 " oil on canvas panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100. free shipping

This is a beautiful, happy chicken who enjoys watching people and strutting around. This will look great sitting on a little display easel in a kitchen. Need a Christmas gift for someone special?

I've been watching football today and I'm happy that we won the game in Raleigh.

Also happy that we get that extra hour back tonight and it won't be quite so dark when I get up in the morning.

Happy November!

Pottery With Pomegranate, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry
Today I felt much more focused on doing one thing at a time, namely, painting. The last couple of weeks I've had interruptions, and even though I was painting every day, it was not in large blocks of time. So today was fun. I spent a lot more time setting up this still life and making sure I was happy with the placement of the items before I dove into drawing and painting.

I took this photo indoors because it's raining here, making it nice and cozy in my studio.

I'm so glad November is here with lots of fun things coming up.

Halloween Guys

Light The Candles, 5 x 7 " oil on panel, ©2012, Fay Terry

I have been putting out Halloween Decorations a little at a time and all of a sudden remembered these, which I had not unpacked yet. They have large candles in the bottom and burn for hours so we'll do a trial run tonight. I line them up along the walk up to the front door and I have about  twenty so they make a nice showing at night.

Are you dressing up tomorrow?  I am debating, but I usually do.

Camellia

Sitting Pretty, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100.  free shipping worldwide

This is the first Camellia painting of the season and there will be more to come.  All of ours are deep rose so maybe I can borrow some from one of my neighbors who has pale pink ones.
I'm off to the beach for the day to deliver some paintings and it's going to be sunny seventies.

Thanks for viewing my art and commenting.

Sheltered

Unbitten, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100.

Many of the flowers got frostbite and turned brown, but the Hydrangea bushes are snug up to the screen porch and they are still going strong. This pretty pear also has not been bitten but it is the last of my pears that I bought to paint and is just now getting ripe enough to eat.  I love all these blues and greens, and still having fun painting baskets. Up next? Camellias and more.

I have several commissions I am working on for Christmas so let me know if you have something you'd like me to paint for someone special (or maybe for yourself).

If you are interested in this painting and are local, I can deliver it to you and will change the paypal button to remove shipping charges.

National Pumpkin Day

Pumpkin Picnic, 6 x 8 " oil on canvas panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100.

I was attracted to the light and shadows first, but then I liked the fact that each pumpkin seemed to have its own personality and they all looked like good friends getting together for a picnic.
This had a busy background of people walking past which I chose to leave out. I am trying out a new canvas panel by Raymar and I like it but I have some others I want to paint on before I order more.
I still like gessobord, especially for the small square paintings, but it's fun to try new materials.

It was my intention to post this yesterday for National Pumpkin Day, but it got too dark to photograph it.
Did you know the world record pumpkin weighs 2,032 pounds and was grown in the Napa Valley?

Sunset Owl

Just Before Dark, 6 x 6 " oil on canvas, ©2013, Fay Terry

I love the colors in these feathers almost as much as I love the eyes. These birds are so beautiful and  strong looking.  They look calm and confident because they are wise. This one is ready for Halloween in five more days.

Night Owl

 Bright Eyes, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

SOLD

Owls are fun to paint and are just one of the many creatures sometimes associated with Halloween.
Bats, black cats, spiders, and a few others are among this group.

Owls are unable to move their eyes within their sockets very much, which means they must turn their entire head to see in a different direction.  Since owls have forward facing eyes, they have very well-developed binocular vision. That means vision that incorporates images from two eyes simultaneously. The slight differences between the two images, seen from slightly different positions, give the owl excellent depth perception.

Have a great week-end! Thanks for viewing my art.

Italian Kitchen

Marina Di Chioggia, 6 x 6 " oil on panel

I carried this twelve and a half pound squash up to my studio so I could paint it.  Knobby with sugar warts all over, it was grown in the mountains of North Carolina. It can be grown here, too, so I am going to save some of the seeds to plant next spring. This is an heirloom variety, not a hybrid from a seed company.
Marina Di Chioggia originated in a little village near Venice on Italy's Adriatic coast. It is prized for its flavorful flesh and is sometimes used to make gnocchi, little dumplings that are also made with potato.
If you haven't tried this winter squash, you may be able to find one at your local Farmer's Market.  It is easy to cook by roasting in the oven after cutting into wedges and laying cut side down on a baking sheet. Baking may take up to ninety minutes. Then you can scoop it off the skin and puree it to make soup or just eat like mashed potatoes. You can even try making some gnocchi.
Delicious!

Frost Soon

Late Roses, 8 x 8 " oil on cradled panel ©2013, Fay Terry

We will probably have frost this week which will end the blooming of many of the flowers.
These roses have been especially nice to have in October, along with the Hydrangeas, Geraniums, Petunias, and Hollyhocks. It is time for them to go and they'll be back next year.

We went to Charleston over the week-end to see the American Impressionist Society National Juried Show. What a wonderful job Gallery M did with hanging the show. There were so many gorgeous paintings by such skilled artists.  Bill and I had a great time and nice warm weather.

Pomegranate Pose

Available Snack, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100.

Pomegranates are so shiny and beautiful with their luscious color and cute shapes.
They've become even more popular as research shows how good they are for our health.
Compounds called punicalagins are found in this fruit and benefit the heart and blood vessels, even to the point of melting away heart blockages and lowering blood pressure. There are also many other benefits that have been documented.

I hope you've had a great week-end.  Thanks for following my art.

Half Way To Halloween

One Of Many, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100. free shipping

My husband loves buying pumpkins. He starts with two or three around October first, before I realize it we  have a dozen. I like them, but in small quantities.  Admittedly, they are fun to paint, look great against blue, and decorate the yard nicely for Fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.

There is a small project taking place here that I have declined participating in. Bill and my daughter are creating some chevron stripe pumpkins. I'll take a photo when they finish so you can see the results.

Thank you for following my blog!

California Flower

Blooming In San Diego, 5 x 7 " oil on panel ©2013, Fay Terry

I love it when my kids send me photos and this gorgeous flower was painted about a week ago when I received this picture while they were in California. I forgot to post it so here it is in all its glorious color.
I am working hard in the studio and happy with what is happening at the easel.

Thanks for commenting and looking at what I paint!

Some Favorite Things

From Garden To Table, 16 x 20" oil on canvas, ©2013, Fay Terry

This is what I have been working on yesterday and today. I just completed it and hope you enjoy it.
It's always fun painting things you love which for me that includes Pansies and baskets.
Our Camellias have already begun to bloom so I will probably be starting to paint them soon.

$75. until October 16th

I just love these bright little pumpkins and the tablecloth beneath them.  They are giving off lots of energy and reminding me of the fun of October.

Thanks for looking at my art!

Halloween Special

Ghostly Pumpkin, 6 x 6 " oil on archival panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100.
reduced price (ends October 16th) so you can have it by Halloween
$75.00

What a spooky fun pumpkin this is! I love the white pumpkins and almost made a Jack-o-Lantern out of this one. Maybe I'll do that soon and paint it again. We are so fortunate to live in a neighborhood where everybody decorates (a lot!) for Halloween and we have huge numbers of trick or treaters.
My husband and I even dress up to answer the doorbell.
This painting  comes with a free easel so you can enjoy it on a tabletop year after year.

Thanks for all your comments and support of my daily paintings. I love doing this!

First Choice

Pinehurst Pansy, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

Sold!

No sooner did I say "paint outdoors"than the rain came in buckets to keep me in the studio.  I was happy to have some unplanted Pansies on the porch like this one which begged to come inside and model for me.
I purchased three sizes of these baskets to help better organize my studio. I am putting them to good use but just had to empty this one out again because I love painting it.
Pansies are planted here in October and bloom all winter. They keel over when the first hot weather arrives around April.

Thank you for following my blog. I welcome questions and comments always.

Basket Fun

Nantucket Pears, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

This one is perhaps my favorite of the pear series, which ends today. I love this basket which I
purchased during the summer and I plan to use it in my paintings frequently.
I bought some mangoes so they might appear soon. I hope to find time to paint outside this week while we are having these beautiful days.

Social Visit

Friendly Chat, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

These Bartlett pears may not be ready to eat for awhile. They are very green and hard, pretty to look at but not tempting yet. I remember that pears were my favorite fruit when I was growing up and my mother always bought them for us when they were in season.

It's a gorgeous day and I have been painting all morning and still have more I want to do. I will be outdoors enjoying the sunshine before long, though!

Bartlett Family

Three Stems, 6 x 6 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

SOLD

These are new pears with very long stems and curvy shapes. One of them will stand, the others prefer to recline. The next bunch will be given a posture test before leaving the market.
They are very pretty and chased the previous group out of the studio. These three have sunny dispositions. They will look great in your kitchen.

Have a fabulous, fun, week-end, I'll be here painting which is great fun for me.

PS I am doing commission paintings for Christmas, so email me if you have something in mind, large or small. The sky's the limit!

Complementary, my dear!

Anjou, Anjou, And You, 5 x 7 " oil on gessobord, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100, includes shipping

Pears are more fun to paint than I ever imagined.  Pear shadows are interesting too. I'll be buying some red pears to paint soon but for right now I want to keep working with the green ones. I saw some at the market with more curves. I think I'll try eating painting some of those. I guess it's time to enjoy consuming these. Tonight I'll be in Chapel Hill and can browse the produce section at Whole Foods for curvy pears.

Small Daily

Patriotic Pears, 6 x 6 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100 and free shipping

I am officially back to doing my small daily paintings since many of you have told me you missed seeing them each day.  Thank you for motivating me to get back to posting a painting daily. I do paint every day but since I have been painting some very large works, posting has been less frequent.
So glad to have these  Anjou pears on hand which are very sturdy and show no signs of softening.
Maybe I'll paint another pear painting for tomorrow.

Endless Summer

30" x 30" on gallery wrapped canvas (1. 5" deep)
Available

This painting spent far too long waiting for me to notice it in my studio. When I did, it seemed the perfect time to finish it because my Hydrangeas are still in bloom, and I have pears in the kitchen. The painting had only been drawn on the canvas, from a still life set-up that I could barely remember.
Luckily, along with the flowers and pears, I located the vase I originally drew. It was exciting to work on  an end of summer painting since that is my favorite season.

Haven't given this a title yet, email suggestions to me, PLease!

Thanks for your comments and for viewing my paintings.

The lighthouse and the artist

Monhegan Lighthouse & Artist working, photo by Harvey Spears

I arrived early one August morning on Lighthouse Hill and I was painting before the fog even began to lift while wishing for a sunny day. The lighthouse was not my subject, instead I was painting the white, red-roofed buildings to my left, and the large rowboat beside them.
Completely in my zone, I was not even aware of people coming and going at the scene. Later in the day I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful photographer who had been capturing images in various spots on the island, including some of me at the easel.
I hope you will visit Harvey's website and his wonderful blog.

click to see website (amazing photos)

click to visit blog (Mr. Spears is also a good writer)

Soon I hope to post the painting I was working on, but it needs a little more work!
By the way, the sun eventually came out.

Painting Large

French Countryside, 30 x 24" oil on canvas, ©2013, Fay Terry

Will be available framed at One Eleven Main, Aberdeen, NC

There are certain travel scenes that I have fallen in love with and this is one of those that I can't seem to get enough of. It was painted from a photo I took on a trip three years ago.  I have painted it several times, each one different from the others.

I will be taking new paintings to OEM this week and if you live nearby, I hope you will visit and take a look. I have been hard at work at my easel, mostly working on large paintings. I know that Betsy, Erin, and Julie have also been working to bring lots of fun, beautiful, and unique items into the store. There is always a tempting array of gifts, clothing, art, and home decor.
The colors above, especially the blues and purples, are a tiny bit more subdued than they appear in the photo.  The afternoon light has changed and I may have to find a new spot outdoors to photograph paintings.
Thanks for viewing my art and following my blog!

Bald Head Island Light

Old Baldy, 5 x 7 " oil on gessobord panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

SOLD

This is a painting I did while I was on Bald Head Island. We had wonderful weather and I worked on lots of new paintings. This is one of my favorites because I have been planning to paint "Old Baldy" for quite a while and finally got around to it.  I am very pleased with the way it came out. I used Prussian blue in the sky which I consider to be a warmer blue than Ultramarine which I often use. It was also a good time to see the marsh grasses showing some fall color.

The Bald Head Island Light is the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina. It was built in 1817 so it will be having a 200th birthday soon. It is a hundred and ten feet tall and has five foot thick walls. It was built with red brick and then coated with stucco which was originally white. The stucco has been repaired many times giving it a charming patchwork look.

Island Mermaid

Monhegan Mermaid, 8 x 8 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$125 with free shipping

This is one of my favorite sights on Monhegan Island, and we walked past it several times each day.
This painting was so much fun to paint, I had never painted a mermaid until now and I think I will look for others to paint, especially if they are on signs. The seagull above her and the entire sign look as if they were hand carved. It is very old so it would be interesting to know its history.

Thanks for looking at my art! It is always great to hear from you.

Guarding The Dock

Gull In The Sun, 5 x 7 " oil on panel

$90 plus shipping

This is one of the many seagulls I photographed. They never seem to stay in one spot long enough to paint. They were all quite plump but that may just be in preparation for the long cold days ahead.

Thanks for following my painting journey and for all the nice comments you send me!

Cool Spot For Painting

Camden Afternoon, 5 x 7 " oil on panel, ©2013, Fay Terry

$100, includes shipping

While I was in Camden, Maine, I walked to the top of Mount Battie one morning to look down at the view of Camden Harbor. It was beautiful but shrouded in a light fog and it was very cold. I decided not to set up my easel and paint.  After lunch, the sun came out and I found this pretty area just south of town on the way to Rockland. The shadows on the sand were particularly nice and the lush foliage made the whole scene soft and summery.

Below is a photo of Camden Harbor (as seen without the fog) from Mount Battie.
